Heather Lawrence’s long-awaited vacation to Salzburg wasn’t supposed to go like this. Mere hours into the transatlantic flight, the Houston FBI agent is awakened when passengers begin exhibiting horrific symptoms of an unknown infection. As the virus quickly spreads and dozens of passengers fall ill, Heather fears she’s witnessing an epidemic similar to ones her estranged husband studies for a living—but this airborne contagion may have been deliberately released.

While Heather remains quarantined with other survivors, she works with her FBI colleagues to identify the person behind this attack. The prime suspect? Dr. Chad Lawrence, an expert in his field . . . and Heather’s husband. The Lawrences’ marriage has been on the rocks since Chad announced his career took precedence over his wife and future family and moved out.

As more victims fall prey days after the initial outbreak, time’s running out to hunt down the killer, one who may be closer to the victims than anyone ever expected.

I found the story of Author DiAnn Mills latest release, Airborne, to be a timely read. Mills’ story pertains to an airborne virus that spreads via the passengers of a transatlantic flight. Readers will meet FBI agent Heather Mills, her husband Chad Mills, and Thomas Powell, a passenger of the flight that befriended Heather. Together, the three characters will develop the story as their lives are intertwined.

Mills’ Airborne is a well-written story. I found the reading to be extremely easy and brought together well. Each step builds upon the last creating a very smooth path to the finale. There are no huge time jumps to past events that caused chaos or jumbled the reading. Now don’t get me wrong, there are discussions of past events, but not where full chapters take place within a past time frame. This helped to give a clear read without any guessing as to what is taking place.

I was concerned that the base of the story would cause it to be a heavy read considering where we are in today’s world – an airborne virus – however, it really wasn’t at all. The virus within Airborne is in many ways just one aspect of the total story, but as a whole, my opinion is that the story is really about the characters we meet, how they are brought together, and the story triangle weaved between Heather, Chad, and Thomas. The virus is just what brings them together.

Let’s consider the characters. Heather was easy to support right away. She was an encouraging character that helped to bring forward her supporting characters. On the other hand, Chad, her husband, I really didn’t care for during the majority of the read. I do think this is the plan of DiAnn in order to help develop these two characters. Chad’s development comes due to taking a leap of faith to believe in a power larger than himself.

My biggest hurdle with Airborne is the length. During the second half of the book, I found the reading to drag on. The first half of the reading is where much of the depth of the book lives with the second half feeling as it is more dialogue between characters. It is the second half that seems to really drag along with more filler conversation that doesn’t necessarily need to be there. This is a big issue I have with books because it makes it difficult to finish. This is one of those areas that had me teetering on a 3 or 4 ranking for this read.

Overall, Airborne is a good book and worth the read. I do think it could have been tightened up as some of the read seemed to drag along, but it is a great story that will have you loving the latest DiAnn Mills release.
