How I keep the main series character fresh

This is a problem for all authors who write series. For example, Sue Grafton’s character Kinsey Millhone lived and worked in one calendar year through 25 different books spanning over 30 years. I have chosen to have my characters move forward slowly. It is the nature of the characters in a thriller series to have a low moral arc while undergoing emotional reactions. This does not require them to make drastic changes in their private life (James Bond, Spencer for Hire, Columbo, etc.) Readers expect to find the same flaws and strengths that first attracted them to the series and the character. They want to see how the character uses those strengths and works around the flaws while saving lives.

For example, Jacob Stearne has moved forward one year in his lifetime during the last three calendar years in our lives. Jacob will always dedicate himself to fighting evil in our world; that won’t change. However, Jacob has recently begun to search for meaning in his life by looking for love. He wants to find the right girl, settle down, and have kids. While he has been unlucky to date, bad guys keep rearranging his dating calendar, we shall see…

Seeley James’ near-death experiences range from talking a jealous husband into putting the gun down to spinning out on an icy freeway in heavy traffic without touching anything. His resume ranges from washing dishes to global technology management. Seeley’s love of creativity began at an early age, growing up at Frank Lloyd Wright’s School of Architecture in Arizona and Wisconsin. He carried his imagination first into a successful career in computer technology sales and marketing, and then to his real love: fiction.
